What is ESTIEM ?

ESTIEM (European Students of Industrial Engineering and Management) is an organization for European industrial engineering and management students, founded in 1990. It includes faculties of industrial engineering from numerous universities and colleges across Europe. ESTIEM aims to create and maintain connections among European industrial engineering students and facilitate international collaboration between different student organizations. Currently, ESTIEM consists of 77 local groups representing around 60,000 members from 30 countries. Our student organization, Kaplaaki, is one of the founding members of ESTIEM.

ESTIEM-events

ESTIEM organizes many different events both locally and at the European level. You can find all future ESTIEM events at: https://estiem.org/events

Council Meeting (CM)

A general assembly held twice a year where decisions are made about upcoming projects and events, votes are cast for ESTIEM board members and project leaders of committees, and the future direction of ESTIEM is outlined. Two delegates from each local ESTIEM group across Europe are sent to attend. In addition to delegates, any ESTIEM member can apply to attend CM through extra spots.

T.I.M.E.S
An international case competition (Tournament in Management and Engineering Skills). In the preliminary rounds, teams solve a case and present their solutions to a local jury. The winning team from the preliminary rounds advances to the semi-finals to compete against other European semi-finalists. Kaplaaki’s T.I.M.E.S preliminary rounds are held around the turn of the year.

Vision
A week-long event that combines an academic section with plenty of leisure activities focused on exploring local culture. The academic sessions often relate to the specific expertise or field of the host city’s local student organization. Vision aims to foster connections between students, researchers, and industry representatives and develop students’ creativity and skills through various workshops and training sessions.

Europe 3D
An academic event where students explore the host country from three perspectives: politics, economy, and culture. It aims to increase international awareness and build networks. The event includes workshops, lectures, activities, and cultural experiences. A total of 20 ESTIEM members and 20 external participants join the event.

Activity Week
A week of fun and exploration of local culture! Depending on the theme, Activity Week may include excursions, company visits, parties, student gatherings, or skiing. It’s a chance to experience fantastic adventures, have fun with friends, and learn new things about different cultures.

LG X (Local Group Exchange)
A week-long exchange with another Local Group. The week involves getting to know the local culture and city, evening activities, great food, and new friendships. LG X events are low-threshold, welcoming anyone interested, and are an excellent first step for new ESTIEM members (freshmen). LG Lappeenranta participates in these exchanges annually, and application information is shared in advance on Kaplaaki’s Telegram.

Brain Trainer
An academic event focused on developing interpersonal and business skills through practical methods and training sessions, led by industry professionals.

Note: Only ESTIEM members can apply for these events. If you’re not yet a member, you can join by sending an email to estiem@kaplaaki.fi.

Lean Six Sigma (LSS) Course

Obtaining credits for the ESTIEM Lean Six Sigma course:

The Lean Six Sigma course completed through ESTIEM can be credited if the program director approves it, provided the student can submit a certificate or transcript from the ESTIEM-organized Lean Six Sigma training. This can then be used to substitute LUT’s course CS20A6040 Lean Six Sigma Green Belt.

The course can be placed in the elective studies of either a bachelor’s or master’s degree. In the master’s programs for Production Management and Data Analytics in Decision Making, the course can also be included as an elective within advanced studies.

To apply for course equivalency, submit an equivalency request in Sisu for the course “CS20A0030 Lean Six Sigma Green Belt” and attach the certificate or transcript as supporting documentation.

Vitako

Kaplaaki applies annually for a grant from the Viipuri School of Economics Society, Vitako, to support the international activities of our student organization.

Vitako was founded in Viipuri in 1919 with the goal of raising funds to establish a school of economics in Viipuri. However, during the wars, the society had to relocate to Helsinki. Fortunately, the funds collected were successfully transferred with the society and remained under Vitako’s management. Fundraising continued, with a new plan to establish an economic school in Eastern Finland instead of Viipuri. This goal was realized when the establishment of Lappeenranta University of Technology (now LUT University) was confirmed by law on February 25, 1966, partly thanks to Vitako’s efforts.

Since the founding of the university, Vitako has supported various developmental projects at the school each year. Vitako played a significant role, both financially and through expertise, in establishing the Department of Business Administration in Lappeenranta in the late 80s and early 90s. The society’s mission remains focused on supporting the development of business education in Lappeenranta and fostering the rapid growth and internationalization of the business school.

Our guild, Kaplaaki, which combines engineering and business studies, is fortunate to benefit from Vitako’s support in advancing its international initiatives. This grant allows Kaplaaki to reimburse travel expenses for ESTIEM trips for our members. A big thank you to Vitako for enabling and supporting our organization’s international growth year after year.

Every member is entitled to apply for reimbursement for two trips made during the year. You can find more information about ESTIEM travel reimbursements and detailed instructions for applying here:  “Billing & Reimbursement Guidelines”
